For those of you who don't  already know, in January of 2013, my eldest son, Jude, was diagnosed with a Wilms Tumor. After the removal of his right kidney, six days of radiation, and 25 weeks of chemotherapy, we were thankful his cancer went into remission. Praise God! He was treated at UVA Hospital, as there are no pediatric oncology services here in Lynchburg, Virginia. I was his primary care giver, as my wife was eight months pregnant at the time. We also had a 17-month old son who needed to be
cared for. I am a cancer survivor myself. I was very familiar with the protocol of treatment, and thankful to have had the life experience to serve as a steady guide for Jude.
One of Jude’s favorite things to do during his stay in the hospital was to play with toy sea creatures and various other toy animals. He had such a multitude of them in his hospital bed at times, that I’m not sure how he was able to sleep at night! When Make-A-Wish®, Greater Virginia, offered him a “wish,” he chose to go to the Galápagos Islands, for all of the different and rare wildlife he would encounter.
In March of 2017, our trip finally arrived, and we made our journey to the islands. As a professional photographer and multi-media specialist, I was enthusiastic to document the trip photographically. I wanted Jude to always have something tangible to help him remember this incredible experience.
After we returned home, we ran into Ted Batt, at The Academy Center of the Arts in Lynchburg. He asked us about doing an exhibit. After much thought, I agreed. I also wanted to use this opportunity to give back; to raise funds to help make another child’s “wish” come true.
